Sustainability Tour to Helsinki for University Students

Example study tour

Finland is one of the world's leading countries in environmental research, with a commitment to transforming the country into a “socially, economically and ecologically sustainable society by 2030”.

Sustainability in Finland extends to almost all aspects of life, from adopting 'slow food' principles of eating natural and locally-produced food, and 'slow travel' for more sustainable ways of getting around, right through to the design and development of the city's sustainable buildings.

Our 4-day example study tour allows your students to discover more about the sustainable development of the city; giving them an insight into key topics of sustainability.

Custom-made 4-day itinerary to Helsinki

Day 1 - Arrive in Helsinki

After boarding a daytime flight to Helsinki, the group will make their way to the centre of Helsinki by train, followed by a short tram journey to the group’s accommodation.

Staying at a student-friendly hostel, the group will be based close to the city centre of Helsinki and within walking distance to Senate Square and Esplanadi.

The group will get the opportunity to explore the local area and enjoy a pre-booked dinner at their accommodation in the evening.

Day 2 - Haltia Finnish Nature Centre & Oodi Sustainable Library

Continental breakfast served at the hostel.

The group will be picked up by coach, for their visit to Haltia Finnish Nature Centre. The city’s sustainable Nature Centre, located close to Nuuksio National Park, is built entirely from wood and heated and cooled with energy derived from the sun and the earth. Combine your students' guided visit with a hike in the nearby forest trails.

After this the group will visit Helsinki’s newest sustainable and architectural icon, Oodi Sustainable Library.  Apart from its striking design, Oodi is extremely energy efficient. Its energy consumption level is almost zero.

In the evening, the group will enjoy a pre-arranged dinner at their accommodation.

Day 3 - Viikki, Recycling Centre & Bicycle Tour

Continental breakfast served at the hostel.

The group will then benefit from a guided walk of Viikki. Viikki is a small residential area located approximately 8km from Helsinki which showcases sustainability in action.   As well as eco-housing, complete with solar and wind energy systems installed, Viikki is home to the University of Helsinki’s biosciences departments, a Science Park, educational farms and water treatment plants, and open farmland which includes a wetland nature reserve.

Your students will then take part in a two-hour activity at the recycling centre, giving them an introduction to Finnish recycling and the circular economy.

Next your group will take to the streets on a guided 3-hour bicycle tour, allowing them to explore the city of Helsinki in a sustainable and fun way.

In the evening, the group will enjoy a pre-arranged dinner at their accommodation.

Day 4 - Return to the UK

Continental breakfast served at the hostel, the group will check out of the accommodation.

Depending on their flight time, the group can spend any free time enjoying the local area, before taking the tram and train to Helsinki Airport for their return journey back to the UK.
