Costa Rica is one of the world's most unique tourist destinations. The natural beauty, climate and diverse landscape make the country an ideal destination for a student field trip.

StudyLink have created a custom 8-day itinerary for students of Geography, Geology and Environmental Science that will cover a range of core and optional modules, such as global environmental issues, ecological systems, and human geography. 

Our custom itinerary has been carefully designed to give the students the opportunity to learn about the country’s history, geography, economy and its culture, through diverse activities in different destinations in the country.

The students will learn in this program about:

  • Geology and Geomorphology of Costa Rica

Custom-made 8-day itinerary to San José & La Fortuna

Day 1 - Flight from the UK to Juan Santamaria International Airport

The group are to make their own way to the airport, in readiness for their flight to Juan Santamaria International Airport.

The group will be welcomed to Costa Rica and receive airport assistance from a StudyLink representative inside the arrivals hall, where they will be guided to their waiting coach.. The group will be transferred from the airport and will be taken to their accommodation, where they will stay for the next three nights. 

A pre-arranged welcome dinner will be hosted on the first evening, along with a short presentation on the upcoming activities for the week.

Day 2 - San José City Tour / Ovsicori

Breakfast will be served at the hotel.

The group will be collected from the hotel by coach for the group's morning activity; a private city tour of San José.

After the tour, the group will be continue on to the Ovsicori - The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica.  This institute is dedicated to the investigation of volcanoes, earthquakes and other tectonics processes.  The purpose of their research is to find applications that will help society to mitigate the effects of the natural phenomena on both the economic and social development of Costa Rica.

In the evening the group will enjoy a pre-booked dinner at the hotel.

Day 3 - Irazú Volcano & Orosi Valley

Breakfast will be served at the hotel.

The group will be picked up at the hotel by coach, where they will be transferred to the highest volcano in Costa Rica, the Irazú Volcano. 

During this visit, they will have the opportunity to cover a wide variety of subject themes, including the geology of the volcano, the differences between the central depression (Central Valley) and the Orosi Valley, the territorial ordering after the eruption of the Irazú Volcano, the agronomy in the volcanic zones and the Cachí Hydroelectric Power Station and the benefits for the country.

During the day, the group will enjoy a pre-booked lunch at a local restaurant and in the evening they will have a pre-booked dinner at the hotel.

Day 4 - San José/La Paz Waterfalls Gardens/Arenal

Breakfast served at the hotel and the group will check out of their first hotel.

The group will be picked up at the hotel by coach for their second stop in La Fortuna.

En route, your students will have the opportunity to visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens, where they can enjoy the beautiful landscape aorund the Poás Volcano area.

Your group's expert tour guide will provide an explanation of the micro climates, the economy around the Poás Volcano, the aquifer mantle between the Poás Volcano and the Barva Volcano.

Lunch will be served for your group at the stunning La Paz Waterfalls. 

After lunch, your group will continue on their journey to La Fortuna, where they will check into their next accommodation and stay for one night.

At the hotel, your group will enjoy a pre-booked dinner in the evening.

Day 5 - Arenal Volcano/ Don Juan Farm

Breakfast served at the hotel and then the group will check out of the hotel.

The group will be picked up at the hotel by coach for transfer to their visit to the Arenal Volcano. At more than 5400 feet, this volcano dominates the skyline and although it's currently in a resting state, this volcano remains the most active in Costa Rica over the last 50 years.

Lunch will be served for your group at Don Juan Farm. This local family will provide your students with an overview of their sustainable agriculture methods and traditional sugar processing. 

After lunch, your group will receive a talk from Mr. Rodolfo Van der Laat about the clean energies route at Ecotermales Hot Springs.

At the hotel, your group will enjoy a pre-booked dinner in the evening.

Day 6 - Clean Energies Route / Cañas

Breakfast served at the hotel and the group will check out of this hotel.

The group will be picked up at the hotel by coach for departure from La Fortuna to  Cañas in Guanacaste to learn about Clean Energies. 92% of the installed capacity for production of energy is from clean sources: hydro, Eolic, geothermal, solar and biomass. 

A pre-booked lunch will be served for your group at a local restaurant. 

After lunch, your group will continue on their journey to their next accommodation, where they will check in and stay for one night.

At the hotel, your group will enjoy a pre-booked BBQ dinner.

Day 7 - Clean Energies Route / San José

Breakfast served at the hotel and the group will check out of the hotel.

The group will be picked up at the hotel by coach and will continue on their tour of the Clean Energies route. During the second part of the Clean Energies tour, your group will learn about the geothermal energy of Miravalles Volcano and explore the use of solar energy. 

Early afternoon, your group will depart and will head back to the hotel in San José, where they will stay for their final night.

In the evening the group will have a pre-arranged farewell dinner, for their last night in Costa Rica. 

Day 8 - Flight back to the UK

Breakfast will be served at the hotel, after which the group will check out of the hotel.

The group will be picked up at the hotel by coach, for transfer to the airport, ready for their departure flight back to the UK.
